The legend of the Koi, in Chinese and Japanese mythology, states that a single Koi out of a great school of the fish that had already swum up the Yellow River, was able to leap to the top of the waterfall on the river. This had taken the Koi one hundred years of trying. To reward its dedication, the gods turned the successful Koi into a beautiful golden dragon.

Precisely how the Koi is represented is full of symbolic meaning. If a Koi is shown swimming upstream, it can mean that you’ve already overcome any obstacles and are no longer fighting against the current. Or, it can mean that you’re still fighting but won’t give up. The colouring of the Koi is also important. When a Koi is depicted as yellow & orange, it represents gold, which in turn symbolises fortune and wealth.
